A FREE, four-month writing institute, IT'S PERSONAL is designed to help participants meet once a month to learn the fine art of essay writing whether for contests, college admission, literary journals or just plain fun.

About the event
IT'S PERSONAL is a four month writing institute for teen girls ages 14 to 17 who are looking to further develop or explore their creative writing skills. The workshop will meet every third Saturday from February through May from 10:30 am to Noon.
Participants will  learn how to structure a personal essay, using a variety of styles and approaches. They will learn how to effectively use lively, descriptive language to tell a compelling narrative.Â
They will be guided by award-winning author jonetta rose barras in writing about events in their lives or preparing a college admissions essay or preparing a work of creative nonfiction for fun. Â Each participant will complete at least two essays by the end of the Institute.
Barras has expertly used the art of personal essay to take readers inside her world, hoping to help them understand and assess important local and national issues. Her writings have appeared in the Washington Post, The Hillrag, The Washington City Paper, Essence Magazine and the New Republic. She has written three nonfiction books and two collections of poetry. Her fiction and essays have appeared in numerous anthologies and journals.
THE INSTITUTE IS FREE, light refreshments will be served.
